African Animals

I photographed animals in a number of great locations in South Africa. We spent a full day driving through Emphaloza/Hluhluwe Conservation Park in the north east of South Africa. There I was fortunate enough to see many species of large animals,4 0f the 'big 5', as well as giraffe, zebra, a variety of antelope and gazelle, babboons, warthogs, monitors, etc. I even sighted lions although at a distance. An african bull elephant is the biggest animal I have ever seen out of the water. It completely dwarfed our little Nissan Micro. When we heard that a young one had chased a Landcruiser we beat a hasty retreat and took a different road. It was also a bit nerve racking being very close to rhino. The only one I missed seeing was the leopard and that was sighted by some people that day. They are most elusive. If you have limited time this park is particularly good for animal viewing. I also visited a cheetah and serval breeding park at Insinkwe near Dumazulu Village where there was a captive breeding program for cheetah, serval, lynx and African wild cats. If you want to see Hippos (nearly as big as an elephant only shorter) and Nile crocodiles, possibly the best place to go is St Lucia World Heritage Wetlands. It has among other wonderful habitat, huge lake systems with large herds of hippos, plenty of crocs and wonderful birdlife. I enjoyed a sunset cruise there and managed a few photos of the local wildlife.
